The Success Scorecard

Uncategorized Feb 18, 2024

I have message for all my fellow high-achievers, top performers, coaches and leaders out there who live in a results based world. And it is this…

Be careful of the scorecard you create to measure your success.

What do I mean?

Well, when you live in a results based world, EVERYTHING has a value attached to it…

  • You either win or you lose.
  • You get the job done or you fall short.
  • You are at the top of the mountain or you are trying to climb your way to the top.
  • You are either the one being chased or you are the one chasing.

When you partner that with the insanely high expectations we put on ourselves as high achievers, it can become overwhelming. If you are honest with yourself, you know exactly what I mean…

In this mental space, loosing and the prospect of failure can become crippling. It becomes so consuming that when you win, even that doesn’t provide any relief as you look ahead toward the next challenge you must overcome. I know, because I have felt this before. In Bill Walsh’s book Winning Takes Care of Itself, he talks about this and how we develop an “…internal accounting system that awards zero points for winning and minus points for loosing”. The real problem with this is that if you keep score in this way, you will never ever get ahead. You will always be stuck and this scorecard will never allow you to break through or break free.

Does that sound familiar?

Maybe it’s because we have been conditioned to attach our self-image to the results we attain. We learn to feel a certain way about ourself both in victory and defeat. Either way, we are creating a slippery slope when we choose to believe that a certain result represents who we are as a person. Thus I am reminding you (and myself) that your value does not come from what you do, it comes from who you are. It all starts by creating a new scorecard for success that will allow you to get ahead in the game of life…

Let this not deter you from striving for excellence, but rather be a reminder to give yourself a little grace in the pursuit of greatness!

I BELIEVE IN YOU!

Choose to make today a GREAT day and always choose to Live Life 2 The Max!
