The Breakthrough Blueprint - Winning is Obviously the Point, But...

Uncategorized Jun 03, 2026

One insight. One thought from a great mind. One shift you can make. All built around one question: What is the difference between good and great?

ONE INSIGHT

Winning is obviously the point, but it's not the purpose.

This is the culture shift that has the power to change everything. In high performance environments where the stakes are high and the scoreboard is worshipped, then it easy to feel like "Winning is the point". But what if it wasn't?

When winning is the only reason to compete (even if you do it a lot), it can still feel like something is missing. But the truth I see in high performing teams is that the ones who play for something bigger than the result are the ones that find something bigger than the result. Winning matters, but purpose is what makes winning mean something. And it's what keeps a team fighting when winning feels far away.

This is something counterintuitive, but courageous you might want to try: Stop talking about winning, and start talking about your purpose. When you do this, winning becomes the byproduct of your purpose - not the source of it. And you never know, experience has shown you might even win more, the less you talk about it!

ONE THOUGHT FROM A GREAT MIND

"People don't buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it." -Simon Sinek, Author (Start With Why)

Why this matters to you: Tactics and systems produce results. Purpose produces loyalty. The teams and organizations that sustain excellence aren't just well coached, they're well connected to something that matters. When your team knows why they compete, they will find levels of effort and resilience that no training program can create.

ONE SHIFT

Moving from "Win the game" to "Compete for something bigger".

The problem is that your environment is built around wins, rankings and titles. The shift happens when you move your focus beyond results, toward your WHY. Then you will access a level of commitment that outcome focused cultures simply can't reach...

A question to ask yourself and/or your team:

  • WHY do you do what you do?
